When 4th of July Became My Favorite Holiday


Most kids’ favorite time of the year is Christmas time when they get to cover their house with lights, decorate the tree and receive presents; but not me. My all time favorite time of year, to this day, is July 4th. Every summer growing up, my grandparents would throw a huge BBQ on the beach for the whole town. My family had been hosting this party for as long as I can remember, and overtime it became an established annual gathering for the neighborhood. The food was great, the atmosphere relaxed, easy, and enjoyable, but the real highlight of the day happened at night… yes I’m talking about the light show. However, my family was a little unconventional when it came to this part of the night. Rather than everyone’s attention being directed at the sky for colorful fireworks, the focus was on enormous lighthouse. Each year my father, my grandfather, and I, would work weeks in advance to create a patriotic design made of multicolored bulbs to cover the circumference of the lighthouse. Some of my most cherished memories are of us working together to create this breathtakingly beautiful glowing tribute to our country. There was no better feeling than seeing the reaction of all the guests when the sun went down and the lights came on. It is a tradition that I will never forget, have passed onto my children, and one I intend to pass on to my grandchildren. This year we worked as hard as we ever had to create our best design yet.
